Life is Short! Don’t Waste Time!
During the commencement address for Stanford University’s graduates in June, 2005, Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computer (co-founder of Pixar animation studios e.g. Finding Nemo, Cars), and inventor of the wildly popular iPod, confided something the audience had never heard. Here’s how that started…
“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything … all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure … these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.”
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way we know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked and exposed. There is no reason not to follow your heart.
About a year and a half ago a dear friend of ours was told she had about 48 hours to live. Knowing this she began sharing great health saving secrets she learn over the years. She gave good advice to her adult children.
“Take care of yourself and get your rest. Set goals and strive to reach them.” And lastly she told them to, “follow your heart, and don’t listen to the haters who only want you to fail in life. They only want you to stay where they can see you and keep up with what you’re doing and not help you one bit. Then one day you’ll be where I am and say to yourself, ‘look at all the things I could have done’. Then it’ll be too late”.
Her doctor advised her to go home and get her affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next few years to tell them in just a few hours. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.
It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma… which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.
Remember, life is short, don’t waste time. Don’t listen to all the discouraging thoughts from would-be friends and the jealous hearted people who may come into your orbit. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
Remember, life is short, don’t waste time. Again, please remember, life is short, don’t waste time! Live and enjoy life! Set goals and try hard to reach them. Look out for the next generation and so on.
